It would be nice to be able to edit the default element IDs. For example, when adding a tank, the user should be able to give it a more descriptive ID instead of "T2" or "R2".

Great user suggestion! We agree that it is important to be able to update the element IDs.
I have moved this into the planning stage and we will prirotize this among other work we have planned over the next month or so.
